The German ambassador to Kosovo, Jorn Rohde, expressed concern over plans to restore the home of Xhafer Deva, a senior Albanian government official who collaborated with the Nazis during World War II.
The German ambassador’s response followed the announcement by the Ministry of Culture, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the European Union office that “restoration work has begun on Xhafer Deva’s house, built in 1930 in the city center (of Mitrovica) by Austrian architects and workers ”.
A joint communiqué of these institutions states that Xhafer Deva’s house “has extraordinary social, cultural, historical and architectural value for the whole region. In terms of construction style, this house belongs to the modern Euro-Western architecture and is distinguished by numerous decorative elements on the outside. As such it is one of the first houses of this style in Mitrovica and Kosovo.
The construction style of this house represents a radical turn from the construction of buildings with the influence of oriental style architecture, to the construction of buildings with the style of modern European architecture “.
The German ambassador expressed concern about the restoration plans of Xhafer Deva’s house, “a well-known Nazi collaborator / protagonist of the infamous SS Division, Skanderbeg. No distortion of history! “Do not distort the truth about the Holocaust or the war crimes committed by the Nazis and local collaborators,” he wrote on Twitter.
