Russia is causing a global food crisis, was the accusation of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, who clashed the senior European official with the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia.
The Ukraine war has blocked food in the country’s ports since February. Ukraine is a major exporter of cooking oil and cereals such as wheat and corn.
Meanwhile, Russia also exports massive grain and fertilizers, and the lack of these exports is pushing prices up in the stratosphere.
Michel addressed Nebenzia directly, with allegations that the Kremlin is using food as missiles against developed countries.
“The dramatic consequences of the Russian war are being felt all over the globe and prices are rising, pushing people towards poverty and destabilizing entire regions. “Russia is solely responsible for this food crisis.” said Charles Michel.
Michel added that he had seen with his own eyes millions of tons of grain trapped in the port of Odessa by the tongs of the Russian army. Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya has taken the same stance.
“Food security in Ukraine and around the world seems to be being deliberately targeted by Russia. “So far, it has stolen 400,000 tonnes of wheat from temporarily occupied areas in Zaporizhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk.” said Sergiy Kyslytsya.
The Russian ambassador accused the European official of spreading lies, and after Michel’s comments that he is hindering the planting and harvesting of these products in Ukraine, due to military activities, Nebezia has left the hall.
Michel accompanied him with the words: You can leave the room, you probably find it easier not to hear the truth.
In another meeting, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also stated that Russia is blocking Ukrainian wheat exports and has accused Russian forces of destroying Ukraine’s agricultural infrastructure.
