Colombian cocoa growers today surrounded a military base on the border with Venezuela with “human chain” to oppose the destruction of their crops.
At least 120 Colombian soldiers have failed to leave barracks surrounded for two days by cocoa farmers unafraid of recruits’ guns.
Soldiers are in the Tibú area for “illegal crop destruction” operations when growers caught them by surprise in large numbers surrounding their barracks.
As reported by the AFP network, the soldiers have been trapped in the battalion since May 7.
General Ómar Sepúleda denounced the absurd situation and the actions of the locals towards his people.
“They are being held hostage by about 300 cocoa farmers who use stones and sticks. “They have blocked the troops from moving from the military base.”
Tibú is the territory with the largest plantings of the drug plant, as an estimated 40,000 are planted with cocoa.
In a similar episode in October, more than 180 soldiers sent to destroy cocaine plants were held hostage by villagers at a school.
They were later released through the mediation of civil society.
