The Colombian navy said today it had intercepted a submarine with four tonnes of cocaine on board.
The operation of the navy anti-trafficking unit off the coast of Nariño led to the capture of the submarine with four suspects sailing towards Central America.
Officials said the seizure is the largest in two years, and removes about $ 150 million in drug money from the market, the Colombian navy said.
The 15-meter-long submarine carried 200 bags of 4,000 square packs that later turned out to be cocaine hydrochloride.
Admiral Francisco Hernando Cubides said that among those arrested was a foreigner:
“Four individuals, including a non-Colombian, were handed over to the competent narcotics agencies.”
“Their crimes can be punished with up to 12 years in prison and a fine of up to 50,000 legal minimum wages.”
