The Competition Authority, as previously announced, on 03.02.2022 has started monitoring the market of diesel and gasoline fuels and, after identifying some reasonable suspicions of possible distortion of competition, has started the investigation on 25.02.2022 , with Decision no. 866, “On the opening of the preliminary investigation procedure in the market of wholesale trade of diesel fuel and gasoline”.
The Competition Authority, with high legal responsibility, made maximum use of the competencies given by Law no. 9121/2003 “On protection of competition”, as amended, therefore the above investigation procedure began with the receipt of the first signals and findings that, in recent months, the prices of diesel and gasoline fuels had a tendency to rise, so without waiting for the aggravation of the situation of the last days.
We would like to inform you that all fuel trading companies are under investigation and, for those companies that will be proven to have violated the provisions of law no. 9121/2003 “On protection of competition”, as amended, the measures of the Competition Authority will be in accordance with the penalties provided.
Meanwhile, the Competition Authority, pursuant to Article 28 of Law no. 9121/2003 “On protection of competition”, as amended, prompted by information and concerns received from the media for the immediate increase of prices for basket products, through Order no.190, dated 11.03.2022, and Order no.192, dated 11.03.2022, has immediately placed under monitoring the entities that operate in the market of vegetable oil products, flour, eggs, rice and sugar.
We clarify again to the honorable public that, in respect of the purpose for which the Competition Authority was established, all these monitoring or investigation procedures are carried out only in implementation of law no. 9121/2003 “On protection of competition”, as amended, without entering in attributes that are the responsibility of other law enforcement institutions in the country.
The Competition Authority considers that it will offer all its support, whenever required, with the best possible expertise in the field of competition protection, for each institution or public board, always maintaining its competencies and independence. his.
