At least 13 people were killed and about 250 others poisoned when a crane loading gas tanks on a ship in Jordan crashed one of them, causing toxic yellow smoke to fill the air.
Footage posted on state television shows a tank falling and hitting the deck of a ship, after which gas rises into the air as people leave.
Port workers were seen fleeing the area on foot. A truck carrying a second gas tank was slowly turning in the direction of the ship just moments before the explosion and quickly changed its course to escape the yellow gas clouds.
“Suddenly, the place where we were staying turned yellow, we could barely breathe, it was poisonous.” tha Auman.
“They were shouting, ‘Evacuate the area, evacuate the area!'”, So we left the area but were touched by the poisonous gases. “Some fainted within a few moments.” said Ibrahim.
According to authorities, the tank contained chlorine, a poisonous gas. Chlorine is widely used in household products like bleach, in drinking water and pool water to eliminate harmful bacteria.
