Scenes of violence and chaos came yesterday from the Jordanian parliament in the capital Amman, where MPs threw fists at each other during the live broadcast of the debate on a constitutional amendment.
Widely published footage shows some lawmakers raging furiously as others try to divide them.
The conflict began during the debate over the addition of an Arab female name as a Jordanian citizen, in the chapter on equality of rights.
But the debate quickly escalated and some lawmakers accused the change of being “unnecessary” and stimulated by foreign factors.
In the footage distributed by the local network Al-Mamlaka, Jordanian MPs are seen trying to punch each other, some others trying to extinguish the blood and another hitting from behind one of the conflicted.
The physical fight initially started between MP Suleiman Abu Yahya and Parliament Speaker Abdul Karim Dughmi.
Abu Yahya had questioned Dughmi’s ability to lead the debate, comments after which the chairman asked him to leave the hall.
MP Khalil Atiyeh, who witnessed the scenes, said: “Initially there were serious verbal clashes and then some MPs started fighting with fists. “The conduct is unacceptable and damages the country’s reputation.”
