An incredible mass of more than 1,000 embalmed animals including polar bears, rhinos and elephants have been caught in several warehouses in Spain.
Authorities are already investigating the ill-fated trafficking network in Valencia, valued at about $ 27 million, which also included tigers, lions, leopards and the now-extinct oryx antelope.
Animal activists and lovers have reacted with horror to the revelations.
It is not yet known if the animals died naturally or were killed.
Eduardo Goncalves, of the campaign to stop hunting in the country, said: “People are horrified by this senseless massacre. “Among them are endangered animals.”
Police said they would file charges against the owner of the gas stations but at the moment he has not been arrested yet.
The director of the animal protection group PETA “Selling exotic animal parts is turning into a lucrative resource for criminal organizations, and it’s the animals that pay for it,” said Elisa Allen.
