Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative disorder that currently represents one of the leading causes of disability in the elderly population and a significant complaint in general.
The physiopathological basis of Osteoarthritis involves a complex set of interactions between biochemical and mechanical factors. This has led to the ongoing search for an ideal therapeutic management scheme for these patients, where glucosamine is one of the most widely used alternatives worldwide due to its potential and long-term chondroprotective properties.
Its use in osteoarthritis is well proven. Crystallized glucosamine sulfate at a dose of 1500 mg, makes the molecule of glucosamine sulfate more resistant to hydrolysis and reaches the body in the right plasma concentration to have a pharmacological effect.
Clinical studies have shown that crystallized glucosamine sulfate not only reduces pain but improves knee function as well as slows disease progression. As a result, it is the only glucosamine registered as a drug in Albania.
Some evidence supporting glucosamine diabetogenesis remains scarce in humans and to date this link should only be considered a theoretical possibility. Generally crystallized glucosamine sulfate has mild and transient side effects and although it is often prescribed by a specialist doctor it can be taken at the pharmacy without a prescription.
Pain management in osteoarthritis is based on pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Ibuprofen is one of the most widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the management of osteoarthritis pain.
This is due to the efficacy and favorable safety profile with the lowest risk of side effects associated with gastrointestinal disorders among all other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used.
It is a well-known analgesic, as well as a reliable ally against acute and chronic pain and inflammation. The combination of ibuprofen with physiotherapy has shown a degree of benefit in patients with osteoarthritis, but recent guidelines recommend the use of crystallized glucosamine sulphate in the early stages of osteoarthritis management.
