U.S. Customs officials have uncovered several packages of human skulls being shipped to the state of Iowa last month when shipments were scanned at an international postal facility.
The skulls were discovered at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport when specialists noticed “anomalies”, for which control protocols were subsequently applied.
“The food chain in our country is already endangered by parasites or diseases that exist in the US so these important findings show the work and commitment of the authorities to protect local agriculture,” said Chicago Agriculture Officer D. Sutton-Burke.
Officers had scanned the X-ray packages and found two human skulls inside a box, covered with clothing used to transport fragile things. The packages came from the Netherlands.
The unusual packages were then sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further analysis, officials said.
Other unusual packages intercepted by officers were bath mats with live mules, which did not have a special travel permit, officials said.
In total, officials said they had stopped 1,667 agricultural security-related shipments containing prohibited items, according to reports.
