The Church of Cyprus has called for the country’s official entry into the Eurovision Song Contest to be withdrawn, arguing that such a move promotes the devil’s admiration.
Greek singer Elena Tsagrinou is set to represent the island nation of Rotterdam in May with her pop song “El Diablo”.
She rose to fame in 2009 when she reached the semi-finals of “Greece’s Got Talent” and was only 14 at the time. According to the official website of Eurovision, the song is about love, when the passion for someone is as bad as El Diablo.
“Today I will burn at a party, it is heaven in hell with you shë I gave my heart to El Diablos because he tells me I am his angelAre some of its verses. The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus issued a strong statement expressing its deep dissatisfaction and frustration with the attitude of the Cypriot broadcasting corporation, CyBC, which selected the song in question. For the Synod this song promotes the worship of the devil and praises the fatal submission of men to his power.
