26th day of the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine has refused a Russian ultimatum to surrender the city of Mariupol, where about 300,000 people are believed to be stranded, ensuring safe passage from the port if that happens.
The mayor of Mariupol earlier told the BBC that Moscow’s humanitarian promises could not be trusted, vowing that Ukrainian forces would fight.
The situation in the city, which is surrounded by Russian troops and destroyed by bombing, is like “hell on earth”, as food and medical supplies are running out.
Attacks in other Ukrainian cities continue, several loud explosions were reported from Kiev, where authorities said houses and a shopping mall were hit, causing four casualties.
The UK Ministry of Defense said Russian forces advancing on the capital from the northeast have stalled as they are located 24 km from the city center.
Meanwhile, there has been an ammonia leak at a chemical plant in the northeastern city of Sumy, which is also surrounded by Russian forces. Officials told city residents to leave within a three-mile radius because the gas is dangerous.
