The only positive result for Albania and Northern Macedonia in the European summit was the admission to the council table with observer status.
Nothing more so, keeping these two countries back away from opening the first intergovernmental conference with the EU.
If in the past, countries like France or the Netherlands with their skepticism blocked the taking of other integration steps, from 2020 the protagonism of the blockade is led by Bulgaria.
Prime Ministers Rama and Kovacevski and Serbian President Vucic at a joint press conference reiterated the word disappointment in various forms. Disappointment that none of them or EU leaders know when it will end.
“Deep regret for the EU. I told them I felt good and bad with them. You feel bad as we are not there as Europeans but as friends in a shared home. The reason is not only Bulgaria. Bulgaria is one aspect and the other the distorted spirit of the EU. The spirit of expansion has passed into hostage-taking. The issue of Bulgaria is a disgrace. Putin may be sick, he may not be sick, but that’s not very healthy here. Whenever something happens in a country, this movement is activated in Bulgaria. Putin and Russian aggression are taking power from Bulgaria. And it is blocking places. There is another kidnapping of the citizens of Kosovo, the only ones who can not move freely. After the liberation, their liberators are holding them hostage. This is crazy. Shy. It must end. “said Edi Rama.
Faced with growing domestic political pressure to oppose the French proposal, Northern Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski sought guarantees and even set some red lines for Macron’s proposal.
“The French proposal is to be thanked. Bulgaria has decided to go back in time and re-establish a blockade. We have stated our position that Macron’s proposal must accept these key elements. Historical conditions cannot be part of the negotiating framework. It must be guaranteed by the EU that Bulgaria will not make new demands. “Nothing more, nothing less, we just want respect for the historical cultural identity of my citizens and they join the EU”, Dimitar Kovacevski.
The most comfortable at this conference was President Aleksandar Vucic, a comfort that comes from Serbia being a few steps ahead with integration.
“We also heard Macron’s proposal to create another community in the EU. It’s a good way. It was useful for me as a representative of Serbia. It was not someone else’s idea, it was our idea to create Open Balkan. We heard someone say it was Orban’s idea. Another says it was Putin’s idea? “I have never talked to Putin about this.” said Aleksandar Vucic.
