Dozens of children are believed to have been hanged today following a major explosion at a school in Nigeria.
The tragic explosion shook the Winner’s Academy school in the Sabon Gari region in the north of the country, this morning when the children had just entered the classrooms.
According to witnesses, many people were killed or injured, while in the published images, children were seen running for their lives after the incident.
Other videos after the blast show burnt bodies left on the street.
The roof of the school had fallen from the force of the blast and witnesses said some children had escaped by crawling under the rubble.
Parents came to search for their children amid panic as anti-bomb units and several security groups arrived at the scene.
Police had confirmed only four casualties by noon but the number is expected to be higher.
Kano police chief Sama’ila Dikko said the blast may have been caused by a gas leak and not a bomb.
Nigeria has been terrorized for years by militant groups like Boko Haram that have orchestrated a series of massacres.
In recent incidents dozens or hundreds of children have been taken hostage by schools in exchange for ransom.
