The irrevocable resignation of Mario Draghi from the post of the head of the executive plunges Italy into a political crisis again.
Now the country is waiting for the decision to be taken by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. Citing sources from the Quirinale, the media in the neighboring country publish three dates when Italians can be called to vote in the new elections: September 18, September 25 and October 2.
Most likely, the first date is considered. Draghi started his speech in the parliament hall where he announced his movement with thanks, which were followed by a long round of applause.
“In light of the vote expressed by the Senate last night, I request that the session be suspended in order to go to the President of the Republic to communicate my decision. Thank you for all the work done during this period. Sometimes even bankers’ hearts can be touched.” Draghi said.
His resignation has been met with regret by ordinary Italians.
“Italy is facing big problems at the moment, which are related to the crisis of the government but also to our European partners. Honestly, I hope that Draghi will think about it once more and the executive will continue his work as it is, because the situation is quite critical for the country”said Alberto Ferrari, a resident of Rome.
“We are still in crisis, with the war, with the pandemic: Draghi is a very respected man in Europe. This decision of his is unfortunate, I hoped it wouldn’t come to this.” said Marina de Micheli, resident.
Mr Draghi’s national unity government collapsed on Wednesday after members of his right-wing, left-wing and populist coalition opposed his calls to unite and complete the legislature’s full term as well as ensure the implementation of the program financed by the European Union for the recovery after the pandemic.
Instead, the centre-right Liga and Forza Italia parties as well as the populist 5 Star Movement boycotted a vote of confidence in the Senate, in a clear sign that they had ended cooperation with Mr Draghi’s 17-month government.
