Eating a healthy diet lowers the risk of developing cancer.
According to research published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, some beverages, such as coffee, may provide nutritional protection against cancer because of their antioxidant activity.
Janet Hildebrand, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society, explained that the study examined coffee drinking habits in nearly one million men and women.
“Those who reported drinking at least four cups of caffeinated coffee a day had about half the risk of dying from mouth and throat cancer compared with people who did not drink caffeinated coffee every day or drank it occasionally.”
Reducing the risk by almost half was sustainable for those who drank four, five, six cups of coffee a day. It was also the same for both those who drank coffee with and without caffeine.
The researchers looked at coffee consumption by men and women who were cancer-free at the start of the study. The findings, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, were maintained even after researchers accounted for smoking and smoking.
The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) explained that “coffee phytochemicals are potentially responsible for the lower risk of some forms of cancer.”
However, the health body added that the effects of coffee are reaped when the drink is consumed without added cream and sugar.
