On Earth Day, the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, joined the action to plant about 100 new trees near the Lake Park.
He said that 114 thousand trees have been planted this season, thanks to the help of children, who have embraced this initiative since the first days, but also to various businesses that donate trees to the city.
“What a great pleasure to return on Earth Day to a place where the greatest example of the transformation of Tirana is marked. This territory where we are, today there are thousands of trees, but once it was all occupied with kiosks, burning plastic, it was a barren land, which was traversed by sewage canals. It was a forgotten miracle, an impassable area for most citizens, ranging from the dam near the Zoo, to some of the private schools on the other side of the Lake. The fact that today we have twice as much space at the Lake, and the fact that we have broken a record by planting 114 thousand trees, makes us feel very proud “, said Veliaj.
He said that thanks to the initiative of the municipality 7 years ago, but also the support of many companies and citizens, the target for 2 million trees by 2030 is more achievable.
“I know that Tirana is in great need of 1 million or 2 million trees, but this is not achieved if we do not plant 100 thousand every year. Thanks to my friends, colleagues and older partners, who are all children of Tirana, we have emancipated not only classes and schools, but especially parents and families, and this is proof of what the human hand does when mobilized. After that, even those who have a social responsibility say, “We will definitely take care of the city”. In 7 years in a row, we have systematically planted over 100 thousand trees per year and we are approaching the target of 1 million trees, to produce more oxygen for Tirana, “said the mayor.
Veliaj called the season closed and invited citizens to look closely at the trees that have been added to the lake.
“We consider the planting season for this year closed, to open it again at the end of October or the beginning of November, to resume a competition with ourselves to plant more than 114 thousand and to make sure we catch the plan to add 2 million trees to Tirana by 2030. Who is skeptical and cynical and thinks that these are stories for show and sale on social networks, I invite him to come from the Lake, to remember what it was like a few years ago and see, I also want to count the trees, because I say that work alone speaks more than any speech and that every useless debate that wastes our time, ”Veliaj closed his speech.
