Pope Francis has clearly criticized Russia for plunging Ukraine into a cruel and senseless conflict and urged world leaders to work for peace, as he noted on Sunday what he called the “Easter of War”.
The Pope made the comments during his speech “Urbi et Orbi” an apostolic blessing given by the Pope on solemn occasions that is traditionally dedicated to world conflicts. About 100,000 people gathered in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
This is the first Easter since 2019 that the public was allowed in the square to listen to the Pope’s speech, after two years of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pope devoted most of his message to Ukraine, comparing the shock of another war in Europe with the shock of the apostles when, according to the gospel, they saw Jesus resurrected.
“Even our eyes are in disbelief at this Easter of war. We have seen a lot of blood, a lot of violence. Even our hearts are filled with fear and anxiety, and many of our brothers and sisters have been forced to shut up to escape the bombings.“, He said.
“Peace be upon war-torn Ukraine, so tempted by violence and the destruction of this cruel and senseless war into which it was plunged“, He said.
Moscow says it is conducting a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Pope Francis, who did not name Russia by name, has already rejected this definition, calling it a war and using, as before, definitions such as unjustified aggression and attack.
Earlier this month in Malta, Pope Francis criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin over the attack, saying a “ruler” was inciting a conflict of nationalist interests.
