The new Omicron mutation will be the main variant in Europe starting in mid-January.
The news was given by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
She clarified that this is the opinion of scientists and according to her the EU has enough vaccines for all Europeans.
We are facing another Christmas in pandemic mode.
But we are more prepared to fight the virus than ever.
Over 66% of Europeans have received two shots.
And 62 million people already had their boosters, which is the best currently available protection against #Omicron. pic.twitter.com/2mNcysmQpZ

Von der Leyen added that so far more than 300 million Europeans (66.6 per cent of the EU population) have been fully immunized against Covid-19 and another 62 million have already received a booster dose of the vaccine.
She indicated that the Commission has decided to undertake several information campaigns online to convince citizens who have not yet been vaccinated.
According to her, the virus is spreading because the whole population has not been immunized. She took as an example the constant restriction of economic activities and schools. Von der Layen pointed out that only 44 percent of the total population worldwide is vaccinated.
