European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says Europe has made progress in tackling the pandemic.
She said that for the first time in history, an EU-funded recovery plan has been set up to help each member state recover from the crisis and reshape its economy.
“In the last two years, Europe has taken a new step forward, developing its response to the pandemic. For the first time in our history we have joined forces to produce and purchase vaccines for all Europeans. Thanks to this choice today we have all the doses needed to cope with the fourth wave of the pandemic. And for the first time in history we have created a European Union-funded recovery plan to help each member state recover from the crisis and reshape its economy. We called it ‘Next GenerationEU’. “With these two decisions we have already entered a new phase in the history of the Union”, said the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during her opening speech on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Catholic University of Milan.
