The Omicron is now the dominant variant of the Covid-19 in London, according to some analysts. About 51.8 per cent of a sample of new coronavirus cases in London with specimen dates for 11 and 12 December were found to lack the S gene (SGTF), otherwise known as the way to detect the possible presence of Omicron.
Most Omicron samples have been found to contain a small but identifiable difference from other Covid-19 variants such as the Delta. This change – a deletion in the S gene – appears in some PCR laboratory tests and can be used as a way to assess the spread of Omicron.
Of the 1,391 cases of Covid-19 in London recorded on 11 and 12 December where the status of the S gene could be determined, 721 were classified as SGTF.
The figures, which are published by the UK Health and Safety Agency, also show that 26.9 per cent of cases detected in the East of England between 11 and 12 December were classified as SGTF, along with 25.4 per cent in the South East of England and 20.8 per cent in North West England.
The level for the whole of England was estimated to be 24 per cent.
