From June 1, the law on avoiding the use of disposable plastic bags enters into force. If it functions properly, Albania can be freed from one of the main polluters of the environment and not only.
The initiative is in line with other European Union countries in the effort for a cleaner environment and better health.
Although disposable plastic bags are easy to produce, their environmental hazard, including health, has led states to take prohibition measures while citizens take extra care not to use them:
To bring to perspective the damage that the use of plastic bags brings some statistical numbers show how urgent an immediate social response is.
• Plastic bags ending up in the oceans cause the death of over 1 million birds.
• They cause the death of over 100 thousand underwater creatures every year.
It takes 500 to 1000 years for a plastic bag to completely degrade.
• There are about 46,000 pieces of plastic waste in every square mile of the ocean.
• In Albania, about 3.2 billion bags are used per year.
Some solutions for replacing plastic bags
Consumers are increasingly joining environmentally friendly solutions by avoiding disposable plastic bags. Many efficient ways are minimizing the use of plastic bags by creating a broad mass of awareness in embracing the clean environment.
Paper or cardboard bags
Paper or cardboard bags are 100% more biodegradable compared to disposable plastic bags. They are also recyclable and reusable. In addition to being more environmentally friendly, paper bags can withstand more if not the same amount of pressure or weight as plastic bags.
Bags with bag material
Bags with bag material are probably the best alternative to plastic bags. They have considerable durability and longevity compared to other options like cotton bags. Like cotton bags, these bags are also a natural renewable resource.
Cotton bags
Cotton bags are preferred because they are biodegradable and reusable. The fact that they are made from natural and renewable sources is also a plus. Cotton bags are still a great alternative to plastic bags.
Traditional mesh bags
