Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a conversation with his US counterpart Joe Biden, said he believed in opening a corridor for the export of Ukrainian grain to global markets during the war.
During a meeting with Biden on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Madrid, Erdogan said he was trying to resolve the process with a “balancing policy”.
“We hope that this balance policy will lead to results and enable the export of grain through the corridors as soon as possible to countries that are currently facing shortages,” he said.
Turkey has played a central role in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine in a bid to reach an agreement that would allow an increase in the amount of grain that could be exported from Ukraine in the midst of the conflict.
During the meeting, Biden praised Erdogan for renouncing opposition to Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership and for “the extraordinary work he is doing in trying to export grain from Ukraine.”
