The US special envoy for the Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, was adamant about Sali Berisha’s case during an interview with the online newspaper Reporteri.net.
Escobar said Sali Berisha could not be the face of the Democratic Party and this is unacceptable for the US.
“President Biden has made it clear. Secretary Blinken has made it clear. The United States will hold you accountable to all those people for engaging in major acts of corruption or trying to undermine democracy around the world and specifically in the Western Balkans. It is not normal and it is not acceptable for a person, sanctioned for major acts of corruption to be the face of any party. “And in this regard, we have made it clear that if the Democratic Party or any other party is led or represented by a person sanctioned by the Secretary of State for major acts of corruption, then you can not expect normal relations,” said Escobar.
The US envoy for the Balkans also spoke about the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
“The current frozen situation, the status quo, in Dialogue is not working. The constant exodus of Kosovar youth is continuing. We expect both Kosovo and Serbia to honor previous commitments to each other. The Government of Kosovo has pledged to have an Association of Serb-majority municipalities (AKS). “Urgently reach a final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia,” Escobar continued.
