The European Union is coordinating actions with the United States amid tensions sparked by a possible Russian intervention in Ukraine.
In a bid to find a response to Russian aggression, European bloc foreign ministers gathered in Brussels, a meeting that, according to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, showed that there was “unity” between member states for action. “Fast and determined” if Moscow makes its plan a reality.
The EU has pledged to support Ukraine in “key areas”, including cyber-attacks and hybrid threats, such as Russian disinformation campaigns. Brussels will meanwhile continue “collective efforts” to persuade Russia to follow the “path of dialogue” in resolving tensions, but according to Borell, the EU is prepared to respond if diplomacy fails.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also joined the meeting by videoconference. Some member states of the bloc expressed concern that the European Union is being sidelined in the current situation, because the Kremlin has focused only on talks with the US and NATO in presenting its security demands. The meeting in Brussels took place after the alliance announced it would launch additional planes and ships to Eastern Europe amid fears of a conflict eruption.
