The EU Commission has stated that gas supplies to the European Union are “currently guaranteed”, but the situation must be “taken seriously”.
“According to our communication with national authorities, security of gas supply in Germany and the EU is currently guaranteed. The lowest gas flows from Russia so far can be offset. But nevertheless the situation must be taken seriously.“, Said a spokesman for the EU Commission.
“At this stage, we must be aware that the situation could worsen further. Early warning statements, which constitute the first level of warning set out in the SoS Regulation, have been made by nine other EU member states in recent months, against the backdrop of Russia’s continued use of its supplies with gas as a means of blackmail. ” added the spokesman.
This comes after Germany further raised the alert level for gas supplies on Thursday, following an earlier statement of the early warning level. According to the EU Commission, Germany discussed the situation with the Commission and the move is part of the EU’s coordinated action on the issue.
“The risk of a complete gas cut is now more real than ever. That is why the adoption of the gas storage regulation along with other preparedness measures is so important at the moment, “EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans said on Thursday.
