The European Union’s turn to Russian oil came sooner than Vladimir Putin could have imagined. The EU will completely give up Russian crude oil and refined products by the end of the year, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said as she announced the sixth round of sanctions against Moscow over its occupation of Ukraine.
“We will give up supplies of crude oil within six months and refined products by the end of the year. This will be a complete ban on the import of Russian oil, coming from cisterns and pipelines, crude and refined oil. It will not be easy. Some member states are heavily dependent on Russian oil. “But we just have to work for it.”said Von der Leyen.
Von der Leyen did not mention any exceptions to the ban, although Hungary and Slovakia, two bloc member states, are heavily dependent on Russian energy imports and have spoken out against the ban.
However, the president of the European Commission accepted a unanimous decision on oil sanctions “will not be easy.” To give countries time to prepare, there will be deadlines.
Specifically, it is predicted that after 6 months the ban on imports for crude oil will enter into force and after a phase of 8 months the ban on petroleum products. In this context it will play a role whether the supplies come by pipeline or by ship.
Von der Leyen also announced the departure of the largest Russian bank, Sberbank, from the international financial communication system, SWIFT. The sixth package of sanctions, which is expected to be approved in the coming days, will also include military officials involved in atrocities committed in Buca and Mariupol.
