A petition calling on the EU to formally recognize Ukraine as a candidate country has already been signed by 232,000 citizens across Europe.
The petition was initiated by French entrepreneur Arnaud Castaignet, Head of Communications and Policy at Skeleton Technologies, and is promoted by Change.org, a technology platform for self-driven social change.
In the petition, the signatories call on their fellow citizens in the EU member states to create a broad wave of support for the Ukrainian people and to encourage their heads of state and government to grant Ukraine the status of official candidate country, a crucial step this in the membership process.
“Through this call, we want to tell the Ukrainians that we support them and that, despite the horrific acts committed by Vladimir Putin and his army, there will be a future for them. And we, like them, want this future to be free, European and on our side“, It is said in the document.
The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky handed over the form for obtaining candidate status to the head of the EU delegation to Ukraine, Mati Masikas.
