Residents and rescue teams today were continuing efforts to rescue a five-year-old boy who fell into a narrow well 30 meters deep in Morocco, already left there for more than 40 hours.
Moroccans today anxiously await news of the dramatic operation to rescue the boy from the deep hole, digging with heavy tools in line parallel to the well.
Authorities said today that the mission was nearing its end and one of the agencies said they had only 9 meters left to dig to reach the boy.
A five-year-old named Rayan fell into a 32-meter-deep narrow well Tuesday night in his village of Ighran in northern Chefchaouen province, local media reported.
Images from the scene today showed heavy excavation tools working in several directions to reach the boy, in the pit that was getting bigger and bigger.
Other footage showed staff sending cameras down the well to monitor his condition.
“The boy’s rescue is near,” said government spokesman Mustapha Baitas. “Our hearts are with his family and we pray that he returns to them as soon as possible.
The well was too narrow for the rescue workers to get off so they are digging another parallel well next to it.
The MAP agency said rescue teams had sent oxygen to the bottom of the well via water pipes.
Rayan’s father said he was repairing the well when the little one fell inside.
Rescue teams said its diameter is less than 45 centimeters.
Anxiety about the boy’s fate has drawn many people to the scene, putting pressure on employees doing their job, authorities said.
