Footage shows the heartwarming moments a polar bear cub was helped by vets after its tongue got dramatically stuck in a can it was trying to feed on.
The young woman called Monetochka had asked people for help after her tongue got stuck in the lid of a tin of condensed milk she found in the rubbish.
The rescue team had flown to the scene from 2,000 miles away from Moscow to the Arctic port of Dixon, one of the world’s most remote communities, after distraught footage of the bear circulated.
Mikhail Alshinetsky, the chief veterinarian of the Moscow zoo, said: “It is a young polar bear, an almost two-year-old female that got her tongue stuck in the closed lid of the can. The animal has spent several days with a stuck tongue and it is swollen, it could neither eat nor drink”.
“Fortunately, they managed to put him to sleep, remove the can and give him antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication.”
The emaciated bear was then placed in a cage and taken by helicopter to the tundra, away from the houses where he had sought help.
vets said they left the animals there, with a supply of fish to recover from.
“We transported the animal to the tundra and gave it an injection to wake it up,” said Alshinetsky.
Russian mineral energy company Nornickel – assisted in transport and rescue efforts.
Earlier, a Dixon resident had tried to remove the can from the animal’s mouth when it approached the house, but failed to save it.
Experts say polar bears never approach human communities in this way.
Russian environmental activist Svetlana Radionova said of the event: “The polar bear was finally found about 3 km from Dixon airport. The animal was seen in a weak state from hunger and thirst.”
Dickson is one of the northernmost colonies in the world, named after Swedish explorer Baron Oscar Dickson, and has a population of just 676 people.
Soon the resident who recorded the footage said: “The bear was very tired and came to us sticking out its tongue, but it was impossible without causing other injuries and people gave up.”
Most likely the bear had found the can in the garbage while looking for food and then came to the village to ask for help.
Experts say polar bears never approach humans unless they are desperate for food.
