The former concentration camp in Tepelena has as of today a permanent exhibition of testimonies, statistics and crimes committed by relatives of opponents of the regime, mainly the elderly, women and mostly children.
This institution of terror functioned from 1947 to 1953 and caused much injustice and pain. 300 children lost their lives to starvation and the epidemic of dysentery in the last two months of 1950. Simon Miraka, a surviving child of the camp, repeated this as the most tragic aspect of that reality, the pain of mothers.
Also Fatbardha Mulleti who for more than three decades collected the testimonies of interned women inside the camp notes that low conscience and lack of justice for the crimes of communism could penalize the future.
In 1955 the Tepelena camp and the inhuman treatment, torture and human rights violations there were denounced by the US and the CIA to the UN and this was one of the reasons for the closure of the camp. Ambassador Yuri Kim said that they will continue to support Albania in finding the facts.
Yuri Kim: “When a child dies he is buried in the heart of the parent and the memory of the children who lost their lives here rests in our hearts.
“No one will relive the past, but for the sake of justice we must face the past and secure peace and give you a grave of the dead. We will continue to support you to find justice and facts.”
About 1500 families, 1254 women, 963 men and 1163 children were interned in the Tepelena camp. The opening of files for this camp started only in 2018. The testimonies of the survivors paved the way for the dramatic memory of forced labor, deportations, internments, the concept of “enemy of the people” and those who still do not have a grave.
