The spread of highly contagious variants of the coronavirus threatens to cause a “fourth potential increase in cases” in the United States, warned Rochelle Walensky, head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
She recalled that about 70,000 new cases a day were registered last week, a number that according to her is quite high. In the same period there were nearly 2,000 deaths a day, Walensky said.
“Please listen to me clearly: with this level of cases, with the spread of variants, we can completely lose the hard-won ground. These variants are a very real threat to our people and our progress“, She said, warning of a possible fourth wave of pandemic in the country.
There are many variants of the coronavirus circulating, but health experts are particularly concerned about some. These include variants first discovered in the UK, South Africa and Brazil, which appear to be more contagious. Walensky says authorities have the ability to stop a fourth potential increase in cases in the country, but urged people to be patient and cooperative.
According to Johns Hopkins University data, over 28 million people have been infected there and over 500,000 have lost their lives, while hope is conveyed by the fact that more than 76 million doses of vaccines have been administered so far.
