“An inevitable fiasco” is the title of the official French report into the chaotic scenes at the UEFA Champions League final in Paris in May, exposing a “series of malfunctions” by the French authorities.
Liverpool fans who flocked to the stadium but were unable to get in to watch their team’s match were tear gassed by French police. Many of them were even robbed or beaten up by local gangs as well, but the footage was deleted.
Laurent Lafon, the co-president of the commission of inquiry, described a series of failures before the match, saying the authorities acted on their plans without much coordination – and that there were “failures” both “in execution” and “preparation” and could never be blamed Liverpool fans for the final for which the world waited more than 40 minutes from the scheduled time to kick off.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin initially blamed Liverpool fans with fake tickets for the chaotic scenes, saying 35,000 supporters had turned up at the Stade de France with fake tickets.
“It’s not because there were Liverpool fans rooting for their team that it went wrong”said Laurent Lafon.
“EIt is unfair to seek to blame Liverpool fans for the riots, as the Home Secretary did to divert attention from the state’s inability to adequately manage the crowds present and to contain the actions of several hundred violent and coordinated offenders.r”, said the report.
France will also host the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The report says the “numerous difficulties” encountered at the Stade de France “have seriously called into question France’s capacity to host major sporting events”. .
