The departure of farmers from Albania is bringing less income to the country.
The country’s economy in 2021 grew at the highest rates of the last two decades by over 8.5%, while agriculture the largest sector of the economy marked the lowest growth compared to other sectors by only 0.28%. Data from INSTAT show that growth rates in the agricultural sector were lower in 24 years. Young farmers, instead of working their land, prefer to plow the lands in neighboring countries. Lack of subsidies is increasing the area of barren lands and emptying stables.
“The solution is to subsidize the farmer per kilogram delivered. Per kilogram of tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, or liters of milk. Only then does all the support go to the farmer“, Says Zef Gjeta.
Many times farmers’ agricultural products instead of the market, end up in canals.
“And the problem is that they do not have a market, and if they have a market, the price that the trader buys is so low that they do not cover their costs. While we know that the market price of the product is high. And this is an imbalance of the market price how much is sold and how much are the costs. Where he who trades earns more than he who produces it. This imbalance must be corrected by the state, not through profit determination, but through control of prices and profit margins.“, Says Teuta Nunaj.
The agricultural sector also plays a very important role for Albania which is waiting for the green light to become part of the EU family. But to meet this criterion, the Albanian farmer must be treated by the Ministry of Agriculture, as a European farmer.
“The Stabilization and Association Agreement between the EU and Albania paved the way for a new agricultural policy for Albania. a policy which is set out in Chapter XI of Albania’s EU membership. A chapter which deals with common agricultural policies. In these lines is the creation of the register of animals, the creation of the register of farmers, agricultural properties and the increase of capacities to deal with all these elements as the public administration that will be taken needs to be trained“, Says Shpëtim Cani, expert on European studies.
During this year agriculture is expected to shrink, rising commodity prices forced farmers to plant less in fields and greenhouses.
