Monica Vitti, one of the most beloved actresses in Italy, passed away at the age of 90.
She was known for her classic films with director Michelangelo Antonioni, such as the 1960s L’Avventura, with whom she was nominated for a Bafta Award. In English Vitti starred in the 1966 film Modesty Blaise where she played the lead actress.
Vitti was distinguished from her on-screen compatriots like Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida by her harsh voice, curls and long blonde hair.
Born in the capital Rome, Vitti began her career in theater, where she was spotted by renowned director Antonioni.
She said in a 1982 interview that “she was lucky to start her career with a great man”, who was also “a spiritual talent, full of life and enthusiasm”. Acting brought him world fame and roles in American films.
Vitti received the Golden Lion Career Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1995. In the 1990s, an autobiographical book of hers became a ‘best-seller’ and was used as text in Italian schools and universities.
