Social media models Simge Barankoglu and Yesim Aydin, who together have more than a million followers on social media, were justified in lying to advertise on their sites cheating with the reward game.
Two well-known Turkish models of Instagram were caught promoting financial fraud online but have already been released on parole after two months behind bars.
Simge Barankoglu, who boasts 900,000 followers on Instagram, and Yesim Aydin, who has 158,000, were among 20 arrested during simultaneous police raids in the provinces of Izmir, Istanbul, Ankara, Kastamonu, Karabuk, Malatya and Mersin last month.
Barankoglu and Aydin had promoted on their sites a game where participants paid money in the form of “taxes” before receiving a “big cash prize”.
The models and their collaborators had cheated about 250 people across Turkey on a sum of three million Turkish lira ($ 250,000) over a six-month period.
But the models say they did not know they were part of the scam and that they had accepted the advertising offer without knowing it was coming from manipulators.
In her statement, Barankoglu said: “I live with advertising money on social networks. “I thought it was like any other advertisement, I do not know either the organizing parties or the complainant, I do not accept the accusations.”
Aydin said: “The money I live on comes from advertising on social media. These people contacted me and told me they wanted to cooperate. I accepted because I do this job. “I would never have accepted if I believed it had to do with fraud.”
During coordinated raids across Turkey, investigators seized a number of computers, cell phones and memory cards that had been used in online fraud.
The two models, who remained in jail for 56 days, were released on bail pending trial.
The status of the other suspects is not clear but many experts warn that Instagram has turned into a nest of fraudsters trying to trick users into sending them money.
