The regional hospital of Fier was engulfed in flames this morning.
The fire is suspected to have started in the imaging department, for reasons that are still unknown.
The smoke and flames caused panic among the patients who were in the hospital premises. The first to arrive at the scene were the Shqiponja forces who provided first aid to the patients, while their evacuation continues.
The imager Aristotel Kusta, tells the media that an electric spark in the imaging laboratory caused the fire.
“What caught fire is the film washing machine. It took action and caused a fire. The fire started there and then took the whole laboratory. There were cupboards, shelves for washing films, they have all gone out of use”.
There were no patients or medical staff in the laboratory when the fire started, says Kusta.
