Two large forest fires on France’s southern Atlantic coast continued to spread into the early hours of today, local authorities said.
Emergency services evacuated three communities near Landira, south of Bordeaux.
According to the prefecture of Gironde, 480 people were evacuated in complete safety. More than 7,000 hectares of land have now been destroyed by flames in that area and in Teste-de-Buch along the coast.
Three houses and two restaurants have been destroyed, according to the prefecture, and the situation remains critical.
In the Rhone valley, further east, the fire brigade brought a fire under control although access to the area was difficult.
