In just a few weeks, the crisis and the change in prices have also affected the basket of basic food products for every Albanian family.
According to INSTAT, the 30 main products of the family basket in January of this year cost 1200 ALL less. Only in the first 2 months of 2022, all these products experienced immediate growth of 19.5% in all retail units.
The greatest increase in value had fats, flour and its by-products, hydrocarbons, etc. Oil and butter prices had the highest growth rates.
A kilogram of butter was sold at 1,000 lek from 682 lek in January, with an increase of 46.6%, while the price per liter of oil increased by 40% going to 320-330 lek per liter from 228.1 lek that was in January 2022. After fats, the highest increase was recorded by flour and its by-products. One kilogram of packaged flour was sold in March at a retail price of 135 lek from 99.2 lek in January.
A liter of milk in Mars was sold at 160 lek per liter, from 120.3 lek in January. While a liter of natural yogurt was sold for 150 lek. Compared to January, only the prices of cucumbers and onions have decreased. Cucumbers are sold 14% cheaper than in January, because new greenhouse production has hit the market.
The state has given 3000 ALL for 3 additional months for pensioners in this time of crisis. Also, their electricity is reimbursed if they are heads of households in the amount of 650 new lek. But is pension income enough for retirees?
To see more concretely how much these price increases are in the pockets of retirees, Fiks Fare asked the elderly. They say they have forgotten the smell of meat and are in debt. With the pension they receive they buy medicines and basic foodstuffs.
But to look more specifically Fiksi chose two retirees who have a relatively good pension. One of the elderly receives 34,500 ALL per month and the other 24,000.
Rukie Varvarica, a resident of the Kërraba area in the city of Tirana, is a dialysis pensioner who receives a pension of 24,000 ALL per month. She says that with the pension she receives, she does not succeed, because three times a week she has to do dialysis and for that she needs transport by taxi because she is far away. She says she has been suffering from a collage of diseases for 5 years and finds normal movement impossible. The taxi to go to the hospital takes 2000 old lekë, for 3 times a week he needs 6000 lekë per week. So all the pension she gets per month she spends transport to do dialysis per month. Rukija says that she takes some of the medicines with a refund, but it is impossible for her to consume them, as they cause blood pressure fluctuations. For the disease that Rukija has, she has to follow a food diet which she cannot get because the foods she has to consume in her diet are very expensive and she cannot buy them.
She lives alone with her husband supporting each other as they have no children. Even the apartment in which they live is completely depreciated and damp. The cost of electricity for the family goes to 3000 old lekë per month, while they do not pay for water because they do not have the means. The elderly indicate that they light a fire to warm themselves, while they wash only once a week to wash themselves. “We have nothing to love ourselves, this is not the way to live,” the elderly claim for Fiks.
Qeranza Basha is another pensioner who receives a pension of 34,500 ALL per month. Even though she tells Fix that the pension she receives is better than that of some of her peers, it is still insufficient because the medication and visits she has to make at the end of each month are costly.
Only for the month of February, she shows that she has spent 19,000 lekë on tests, pays regularly for water, electricity, telephone, as she lives alone and has to talk to her son who lives abroad.
Fiks journalists together with Mrs. Qeranze go to the nearest market to do the monthly shopping with the most important things. All the things that the lady bought cost 6170 ALL. By all accounts, the lady is left with only 1100 ALL at the end of the month. She says that the remaining amount is not enough for anything.
