A well-known Qatari journalist, Al Jazeera, was shot dead today during an Israeli army raid on a Palestinian camp, which the agency said was shot in the face by an army sniper.
Well-known Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, 51, who was also a US citizen, was killed during an army raid on the occupied city of Jenin on Wednesday morning.
Al Jazeera said the crime was committed by Israeli security forces, who said they were investigating the possibility of journalists being hit by Palestinian assailants.
Another Palestinian journalist, Ali Al Samoudi, who works for the Jerusalem-based Al-Quds newspaper, was injured but is in stable condition, the Palestinian health ministry said.
The Qatari news network said the journalist was deliberately shot in the face to be killed by Israeli forces while wearing a vest with the inscription “Press” and a helmet on her head.
In a statement, the Al Jaseera television network called on the international community to condemn “the Israeli occupation forces for the deliberate killing of their colleague Shireen Abu Akleh.”
The Israeli military said in a statement that “Palestinian militants were firing,” although no Israeli soldiers had been hit during the operation.
“He may have been shot by the Palestinians,” said army spokesman Ran Kochav. “She was very close to them, but if she was an Israeli soldier we would apologize for the mistake.”
In the video footage from the incident, Abu Akleh is seen wearing a distinctive blue vest that reads ‘PRESS.’
Journalist Mujahed Al-Saadi, who accompanied Abu Akleh in covering the action in Jenin, told Reuters that they had been targeted by the Israeli army after identifying themselves as journalists.
“When I got back Shireen was on the ground while Shatha was defending himself in a tree screaming from the shooting,” he said.
The Israeli army said that during their operation in the camp, gunfire was fired by armed Palestinians.
Abu Akleh, 51, was born in Jerusalem. She has worked for Al-Jazeera since 1997 and reports regularly from the Palestinian territories.
In recent weeks Israel has carried out daily attacks on the occupied West Bank lands following several suicide attacks in Israel.
The city of Jenin and the refugee camp there is known as a militant stronghold.
Israel has long criticized the coverage of Palestinian news by the Al-Jazeera network but authorities allow its journalists to operate in the territories.
A number of Palestinian journalists have been hit by rubber bullets while reporting on demonstrations in the West Bank while the latest death of a journalist in the West Bank conflict has been recorded in violent protests on the border with Gaza in 2018.
