Not only specialists, but also unqualified workers, the labor force, which does not need education, have been lacking in Albania for a long time.
The industry is the one that is suffering the most, while with the arrival of the tourist season, the service sector as well. Under these conditions, enterprises are turning to foreign employees
“The trend of foreign employees continues, especially with the arrival of summer, where the majority of Albanian employees have left for the south, even abroad. We have increased demand, especially in construction, but also in the hotel industry. Foreign employees are mostly concentrated in Tirana, Durres, Elbasan, Vlora, Dhërmi. The way their recruitment works is that in addition to the database we have with foreign workers and the company’s requirements here, if we have workers in the process, recruitment is done for them, on the contrary, if we have new requirements, their recruitment is done in the foreign country“, says Klesta Dervishi from the Employment Agency.
Skender Milaqi is an entrepreneur in the area of Durrës in the field of plastic products, who has been hiring workers from Bangladesh for more than 1 year.
“This situation started at least in the last 7-8 years and with the passage of time it started getting worse until we were forced to take foreign workers. We currently have about 20 and as soon as we find accommodation we will increase the number to 30 and maybe even more. Today, all Albanian enterprises have to put something in their head, that they can no longer walk with small salaries and not paying full insurance to the workers. I can say without fear that in our company it is difficult to find a salary below 50 thousand ALL. Currently, foreign workers are very satisfied with us and we do not have any workers left. On average, a foreign worker is paid somewhere, the base is 400 dollars, including overtime it goes to 500-550 dollars”says the entrepreneur.
Workers from Bangladesh feel welcome in Albania, while in our country, in addition to their salary, they also have accommodation and food paid for.
“I am Azraful Alam and I have been living in Albania for 7 months. It is good to come to Albania, because we from Asia want to come to Europe. To have a good life and earn some money. They have treated us very well and especially the people have welcomed us very well. It took me about 1 month to learn the work process. In Bangladesh I have a restaurant and a business, but during the pandemic the work stopped and that’s why I decided to come here“.
Meanwhile, with the changes made in the law by the Albanian government, the entrepreneur who subcontracts foreign employees is also responsible for their actions that may be criminal offenses or other illegal actions. In cases where they leave the workplace for Europe, a denunciation must be made, as otherwise they can be punished for favoring illegal immigration.
