Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov was arrested on Thursday (March 17th) as part of a police operation linked to an investigation by the EU prosecutor ‘s office, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry said.
The ministry statement said that along with Borisov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, former head of the parliamentary budget committee Menda Stoyanova and Borisov’s media adviser Sevdalina Arnaudov were also arrested.
“A large-scale operation is underway in Bulgaria in connection with 120 cases of the European Prosecution. Raids and seizures have been carried out at many addresses. “Boyko Borisov, Vladislav Goranov, Menda Stoyanova and Sevdalina Arnaudova are currently detained,” the statement said.
Borisov, 62, is currently chairman of the center-right opposition GERB party.
The ministry did not provide details, but public television BNT said the cases involved “misuse of EU aid”.
The raids continued at many addresses across the country.
“No one is above the law,” Bulgaria’s new Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said in a post on social media.
Petkov’s newly formed anti-corruption party won the general elections in Bulgaria last year with the “zero tolerance for corruption” platform.
The operation follows a visit to Sofia on March 16-17 by Chief European Prosecutor Laura Koevesi.
She praised “Petkov’s determination, leadership and convincing vision in the fight against corruption”.
“Now is the time for the relevant Bulgarian authorities to join us, including in particularly sensitive cases,” Koevesi said.
“That’s why we exist, that’s why we’re here,” Koevesi said. .
