Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to 3 years in prison.
Sarkozy will have to suffer one of three years in prison and thus becomes the first French President to be found behind bars.
Sakozy has been found guilty of corruption on charges of attempting to corrupt a judge.
Judge Christine Mee ruled that the 66-year-old former political leader had “used his status as a former French president” in a “particularly serious” act of wrongdoing.
According to the BBC, the former President had offered a job in Monaco to a judge in exchange for information about a criminal investigation into his party.
Sarkozy, who served as the country’s president from 2007 to 2012, denied all charges against him during the 10-day trial that took place last year.
Sarkozy’s former lawyer Thierry Herzog and Judge Azibert received the same sentence from the court. The investigation was examining several allegations that Sarkozy and his party had received illegal payments from businessman Liliane Bettencourt during his successful 2007 presidential campaign.
