French Minister for European Affairs Clement Beaune said members of the European Union could reach an agreement this week on the European Commission’s proposal to ban all oil imports from Russia.
“I think we can reach an agreement this week,” Beaune told LCI television.
He added that French President Emmanuel Macron, later on May 10, will hold talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the issue.
Hungary is the biggest critic of the embargo on Russian oil.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday that she had made progress in talks with Orban on the issue.
On May 4, von der Leyen presented the EC proposal as part of the sixth package of EU sanctions against Russia over its occupation of Ukraine.
The Commission predicts that the EU will completely give up Russian crude oil and refined products by the end of the year. But to approve this sixth package of sanctions requires the unanimous support of the 27 member states of the European bloc.
