French authorities have pledged to increase police presence on the streets this week as the country is failing to successfully enforce isolation from 6pm to 6am, both in the capital and nationwide.
“If the police find groups of people where no social distance is maintained, especially on the banks of the Seine River or in public parks, they have been instructed to continue their evacuation,” Paris police said today, announcing the mobilization of 4,400 officers over the weekend.
Police also urged people to reduce their contact with a maximum of six people and avoid traveling outside their urban area, to prevent the virus from spreading.
“If during public gatherings it is found that sanitary measures are not observed, people will be dispersed immediately,” the statement added.
Since mid-January the country has set a curfew from 6pm to 6am, but many doubts have been cast on its effectiveness as the number of Covid-19 infections has continued to rise.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Jean Castex withdrew from the proposed plans for total isolation over the weekend, while the mayor of Paris has demanded a three-week closure to bring the virus under control.
There have been ongoing protests in Paris against the isolation measures, organized by workers, artists and professionals from other fields.
