The French parliament has passed a law banning conversion therapies, a practice widely criticized by the scientific community, but which some psychologists claim “cures” the sexual orientation of homosexual, bisexual or transgender people.
Conversion therapies are done with a variety of methods, including electroshock. In France there is no national study to assess the extent of the phenomenon, but a parliamentary report of 2019 talks about the last hundred cases.
The new law was introduced by Laurence Vanceunebrock, MP for La Republique en Marche, President Emmanuel Macron’s party.
France joins several other countries where conversion therapies are banned, including Germany, Malta, Brazil and Canada.
“No one can claim to be able to cure LGBT people“, Said Vanceunebrock.
While, Macron wrote on Twitter that “these unworthy practices have no place in the Republic. “Because being yourself is not a crime and there is nothing to cure.”
