France said today it expects up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees to arrive there and promised to provide accommodation “for all those fleeing the war with Russia”.
“In the coming weeks 50,000 to 100,000 could arrive,” said Joseph Zimet, coordinator of the French government’s inter-ministerial unit for the crisis.
He added at the first press conference of this unit that the group will anticipate arrivals by making reception arrangements.
Since the start of the war on February 24, France says it has hosted 7,251 Ukrainian refugees. The interior ministry said accommodating the newcomers is a priority and has identified thousands of possible waiting places in addition to emergency centers.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin criticized the British government for banning visa-free travel for Ukrainians and welcomed the easing of London rules allowing Ukrainians with biometric passports.
