French winemakers had lit thousands of candles and torches in their vineyards over the weekend to protect production from the surprisingly low temperatures this spring.
Vineyards in almost the whole country have been hit by cold and dangerous weather in this delicate period of the season.
Vineyards of the Chablis variety in the northeast of the Burgundy region have been hit by frost and several springs in recent years which has worried producers to cut production.
Farmer Thomas Ventoura, 34, is among the many growers who have rushed to heat the newly sprouted grape buds, as cold weather can change production and increase crop insurance costs.
Chablis is a dry white wine produced only in the Yonne region of Burgundy, from the country-specific climate.
Ventoura said: “Since 2016, we have had three frosts in this period, which has started to worry us about the future of the business.”
In Yonne, in northern France, a significant portion of vineyard production was damaged by frost last year, the agriculture ministry announced.
Wine producers have therefore joined forces by investing in new tools such as heating cables or torches in their vineyards.
The development comes as the nighttime temperature in most of France, as well as the Champagne region dropped several degrees below zero.
The same phenomenon was seen in the southern areas of the country where along with wine producers and fruit farmers were damaged, writes the local network The Local.fr .
