French Minister for Europe Clement Beaune has said that any European Union offer for Ukraine to join the bloc would take 15-20 years to finalize the process.
“We have to be honest. “If you say Ukraine will join the EU in six months, in a year or two, you are lying,” Beaune told French radio on May 22.
“It can take 15-20 years, this process takes time.”
He has said he does not want to create illusions for Ukrainians or lie to them.
The comments came after French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that Ukraine be invited to join an EU-linked political community.
“We do not need such compromises,” Zelensky told a joint news conference with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa on May 21.
“Because, believe me, there will be no compromise with Ukraine in Europe. “It will be a compromise between Europe and Russia,” Zelensky said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered on February 24 what he calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded with harsh sanctions against Russia, targeting the state’s economy and Russian oligarchs.
