Bekim Mata returned to Albania not only to bring the body of his brother who lost his life in a prison in France, but also to appeal to institutions to seek the truth of the 29-year-old’s death.
Refik Mata was awaiting completion of his sentence at Tarascon Prison and authorities announced that he committed suicide on 17 December. The family and the lawyers they have contacted oppose this version, so they demand the commitment of the Albanian state.
Bekim Mata: The lawyer asked the court and the prosecutor for the brother’s autopsy. They say that the investigations have not been closed yet and an expertise has not been done yet. My brother is not hanged. There is manipulation, the circumstances must be investigated by the Albanian and French state because my brother did not commit suicide.
The victim was charged with theft and according to his family living in Italy, he would be released early from prison in February 2022. But the detail that adds to their suspicions that the prison in Tarascon hides the truth is related to an episode of violence by guards to the young man.
Bekim Mata: They never gave us an explanation as to why violence was used. He promised us that he would conduct an in-depth investigation but until the day of his death there was neither investigation nor response.
The family claims to have gathered evidence from inside the cell that refutes prison reports of a suicide.
